Jennifer Trijo: Reviews

JENNIFER TRIJO - RIP IT UP MAGAZINE ISSUE 969 PG 43

"Jennifer Trijo, star of Miss Saigon, chose Adelaide as the first city in which to launch her debut CD. The diminutive Sydney-based singer and keyboard-player was also keen to acknowledge the support of the Miss Saigon crew and the fact that Adelaide was such a friendly city.

"I've been able to jam with a lot of Adelaide musicians," Jennifer says of local players such as drummer Harry Freeman, bass player Ron Davidson, and guitarist Sam Brittain who helped out at her recent launch.

"So it's been great to build up a bit of a network here," she adds. "And it's been great to organise my first CD launch to take place in Adelaide. I'll do launches in Sydney and Melbourne later on. I know lots of musicians in Sydney where I'm based but networked with a lot of Melbourne musicians when Miss Saigon played there."

Jennifer, a former music teacher with a background of performing with a variety of Sydney bands, will look at recording a full-length album when the current national Miss Saigon tour concludes in Perth at the end of March.

"As soon as my Miss Saigon contract finishes, I'll be free to pursue whatever I want to do. But Miss Saigon has been great for me as it's enabled me to finance my CD and pay the musicians. But Miss Saigon, as well as being financially beneficial, has opened a lot of doors in the way of contacts and networking.

The musician and singer is now looking at offers of any kind.

"I'm open to anything as I think it can only give you more experience. So I'd look at doing anything that would make me a stronger performer. I'd certainly be open to doing another musical, singing with a band or even travelling overseas - anything that will give me more experience."

Jennifer cites the older jazz singers as well as such vocalists as Diana Krall and Alicia Keys as major influences.

"I also like pop metal bands such as Evanescence," Jennifer concludes. "And I really like Katie Noonan as well. In fact I like anyone who uses their voice more than rely on their body image."

Jennifer Trijo's debut CD is available via her website (jennifertrijo.com) and also CD Baby (cdbaby.com) as well as via her Myspace site. Miss Saigon concludes its Adelaide season on Sun Feb 10. Book at BASS.

SWEET SAIGON SMILES

"One of the stars of Miss Saigon was in Norwood last week teaching young hopefuls the tricks of the trade. Manila-born Jennifer Trijo, 24, is starring in the alternate female lead role of Kim, in what is her professional theatre debut. She visited a group of 40 young performers from the Shane Davidson Presents drama school at Norwood's Odeon Theatre on Thursday (January 31). "I want to be a music teacher one day, so this was a great chance to offer some advice and answer some qustions," she said.

STAR OF MISS SAIGON IN SOLO DEBUT

"She's used to singing and dancing up a storm on stage sharing the lead role of Kim in Miss Saigon, but Jennifer Trijo is taking things personally on Monday night.

The singing, dancing actress will release her self-titled debut record at the Cavern Club.

"I'm excited... Adelaide has this rich history in Australian music as well as the arts and culture, so it's great to be releasing (the CD) here," Jennifer says.

"I've been writing songs since I was 14, but growing up in western Sydney with a single mum means we didn't really have the money to explore recording."

"Now I have all these opportunities with Saigon."

And while she's gone solo, she's definitely not alone-Jennifer will be supported by locals Sam Brittain, Ron Davidson, and Harry Freeman as well as her Miss Saigon castmates and musicians Adrian Bendt, Daniel Aguilar, David Piper, Rhoda Lopez, and Samantha Lau.

Meanwhile, Jennifer says her soulful pop style is inspired by strong female singers like Alicia Keys and Diana Krall and she hopes she too can be inspiring.

"It's not about being a pop star - music is all about the music for me," she says.

"I understand that sex sells, but I don't want that to be the main focus, and if I can inspire other young women and young girls then all the better."

Jennifer Trijo's CD launch is at the Cavern Club on Monday from 8.30pm. The $10 entry includes the CD."

THIS MISS PROVES ONE BIG HIT

The excellent cast sing
superbly. David Harris is
hugely charismatic as the thoroughly decent Chris. Jennifer Trijo, who
replaced an ailing Laurie
Cadevida on opening night, captures Kim's touching
innocence and courage beautifully.

GREED, LUST AND DESPAIR, BUT DON'T MISS SAIGON:

'...Jennifer Trijo (who alternates with
Laurie Cadevida) played the lead role of Kim, the Vietnamese girl who falls for
American soldier Chris (David Harris).

Tiny Trijo's voice is powerful and her
performance compelling, particularly as the protective mother. Harris's initial intensity as the cynical soldier is softened
later by his sensitivity as a husband torn
between two worlds and lifetimes.
The pairing is electric, and refreshingly
both can sing and act - a combination not
always delivered in musicals...'

'...Though Miss Saigon will mark her first big role, Trijo is not nervous.

"Some people find it daunting but I love singing for a big crowd. It's where I feel most at home,'' she says. "To be on stage, where there are no safeguards except the mask of a character, will be amazing.''

Though thrilled to have won the role, Trijo says she is not interested in fame or fortune. Instead the young performer wants to be a positive role model to other young Asian performers and make her community proud...'
